Dementia Memory Services

Specific Focus on Dementia
Our dementia memory clinic specialises in assessing patients with dementia-specific concerns, including different types of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and mixed dementia types.

Features of Dementia-Specific Memory Clinics

  • Efficient same-day diagnostic services.
  • Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination with advanced neuroimaging (CT or MRI scans).
  • Specialist consultations to explore therapies tailored to dementia progression.

Additionally, our private memory assessment clinics offer medications on a short-term private prescription basis, helping you begin treatment promptly while transitioning care to your GP.

Cognitive and Memory Tests

Cognitive and Memory Tests

Memory and cognitive tests are a cornerstone of our memory assessment service. Conducted by highly skilled professionals, these tests evaluate aspects such as recall, recognition, attention, and executive functioning.

Types of Cognitive Tests Conducted

  • Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE)—a recognised and validated tool for identifying memory and cognitive problems.
  • Standard memory recall tests like verbal and visual recall evaluations.
  • Attention-focused tests to measure concentration and response speed.

Importance of Early Detection
Early detection of memory-related conditions provides an opportunity for timely medical interventions and can delay disease progression. For example, identifying dementia early allows patients to access therapies, medications, and support to optimise their daily functioning and maintain independence for as long as possible.

The Dementia Assessment Process

Navigating the various stages of cognitive assessment can often feel disjointed and frustrating when dealing with public healthcare services. At Private Medical Clinic, we have revolutionised the process to offer a seamless and efficient experience. Our goal is to provide you with a definitive diagnostic decision that aligns with NICE guidelines, all within a timeframe that suits your needs.

1. Physical Assessment

The first step in our dementia assessment process involves ruling out physical causes that may affect cognitive performance. We have a network of locations across the West Midlands where blood tests, urine analysis, and ECGs (heart monitoring) can be undertaken. Our commitment to comprehensive testing ensures that we leave no stone unturned in understanding the root causes of cognitive impairment.

2. Cognitive Assessment

We employ the Addenbrookes assessment tool, a recognized and validated measure for specialist memory services in the United Kingdom (Hodges & Larner, 2017). This assessment evaluates recall, recognition, awareness, and performance. You can choose to undergo this assessment in person or virtually, ensuring flexibility and convenience.

3. Imaging

Included in our assessment package is imaging by either CT or MRI scan, depending on your age. These scans provide objective and measurable information about the structure of your brain, enabling our experts to make well-informed decisions.

4. Specialist Review and Diagnosis
Our team includes psychologists who specialise in dementia diagnosis. After completing the assessments, we arrange a concluding consultation, which can be conducted in person or virtually. This ensures that you receive a thorough evaluation from experts in the field.
5. Prescription
Should medication be necessary, we provide a private prescription for the first six weeks. Please note that the cost of the medication is charged by the dispensing pharmacy. Our focus is not just on diagnosis but also on providing you with the initial support you need.
6. Expert Report
We compile a comprehensive expert report that consolidates all the information gathered during the assessment process. This report is shared with your GP and can be used to outline your care needs. It is a critical document that ensures continuity of care.
