Prostate Cancer: Early Detection and Diagnosis

Prostate cancer early detection

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, especially those over 50. Knowing how it develops, recognizing early symptoms, and understanding the diagnostic process can make a significant difference in outcomes.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate gland, a small walnut-sized gland that produces seminal fluid, begin to grow uncontrollably. The prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. While many cases are slow-growing and may not cause immediate harm, aggressive forms of the cancer can spread quickly to other parts of the body.

How Does Prostate Cancer Develop?

The development begins when the normal regulatory mechanisms controlling cell growth fail, leading to abnormal cell division. These cells can form a tumour, and if not detected early, the cancerous cells may invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones or lymph nodes. The exact cause remains unknown, but factors like age, genetics, and lifestyle can increase risk.

Early Symptoms

In the early stages, prostate cancer may not show noticeable symptoms, making regular check-ups essential. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urine flow
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Pain or discomfort during urination or ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen

These symptoms can also be related to non-cancerous conditions like an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), but it is crucial to get them checked by a healthcare professional.

What Lifestyle Factors can Increase the Risk of Prostate Cancer?

Certain lifestyle factors can increase the risk of developing this illness. These include:

  1. Diet: High intake of red meat, processed foods, and high-fat dairy products may raise the risk. A diet low in fruits and vegetables can also be a factor.
  2. Obesity: Being overweight is linked to a higher risk of more aggressive forms of prostate cancer.
  3. Smoking: Smoking is associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer mortality.
  4. Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of regular physical activity can contribute to increased risk.
  5. Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Heavy drinking may increase the chances of developing certain Cancers.

Adopting a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol can help lower risks.

Diagnostic Tests for Prostate Cancer

If prostate cancer is suspected, there are several diagnostic tools available to confirm the presence and extent of the disease:

  1. Blood Test (PSA Test): Measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. High levels may indicate the presence of Cancer, though elevated PSA can also be due to other conditions.
  2. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): The doctor manually checks the prostate for abnormalities. While it may be uncomfortable, it helps detect lumps or irregularities.
  3. MRI Scan: Provides detailed images of the prostate to identify suspicious areas, helping to guide further investigation.
  4. Biopsy: If tests suggest cancer, a biopsy may be performed to take small samples of prostate tissue for microscopic examination.
  5. Cancer Screening: Routine screenings, especially for those over 50 or with a family history of Cancer, can help detect issues before they progress.

Life Expectancy for Those Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

The prognosis varies depending on the stage at diagnosis, the rate of cancer growth, and overall health. For men diagnosed with localised or early-stage prostate cancer, the 5-year survival rate is almost 100%, meaning that many can live long, healthy lives post-diagnosis. However, if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (advanced stage), the prognosis may not be as favourable, with survival rates decreasing.
