What Is a Private GP?

A private GP is a fully qualified, GMC-registered general practitioner you pay to see directly, without needing an NHS referral or registration. You typically get an appointment far sooner, a longer and unhurried consultation, and continuity of care, with the same access to prescriptions, referrals and tests as an NHS GP.

Private GP vs NHS GP: what's the difference?

An NHS GP is free at the point of use but often has longer waits ad shorter appointments. A private GP is paid for directly, usually seen the same day or within days, with longer consultations and greater continuity. You can use both, and seeing a private GP does not affect your NHS care.

Private GP FAQs

What is a private GP?

A private GP is a fully qualified, GMC-registered general practitioner you pay to see directly, without an NHS referral or registration. You're usually seen sooner, get a longer, unhurried consultation, and have the same access to prescriptions, referrals and tests as an NHS GP.

Can I see a private GP the same day?

Often, yes. Same-day appointments are regularly available at many of our clinics and by telephone or video. We are open six days a week. Booking online gives instant confirmation, or call 0208 050 0379.

Do I need to be registered to book?

No. You don't need to register with us or be registered with an NHS GP. Book a one-off appointment or return for ongoing care.

Can a private GP refer me to a specialist?

Yes. If you need specialist input, tests or scans, your GP can arrange a private referral and explain your options clearly.

Will you contact my NHS GP?

Only with your consent. Your care with us is confidential, and we'll only share information with your NHS GP if you ask us to.

How do I prepare for my consultation?

Note your main concerns and any questions, bring a list of current medications, and have relevant dates or previous results to hand. For video or phone, find a quiet, private space with a good connection.

Do you offer home visits?

Yes. Home visits are available from all our clinics, from £295, including out of hours. Distance and pricing vary, so please call 0208 050 0379 to enquire and book.

Do I need private health insurance to see a private GP?

No. You can pay for your appointment directly (self-pay). If you have private medical insurance, GP consultations are often not covered, though onward tests or specialist referrals sometimes are, so check with your insurer first.

Where are your clinics?

We have eight clinics across the UK: London, Birmingham, Oxford, Leicester, Derby, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Sutton Coldfield, with telephone and video consultations available nationwide. Choose your nearest clinic to book.

Can a private GP prescribe medication?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, our GMC-registered GPs issue a private prescription during your consultation and send it to you electronically, straight away. A private prescription is £25. Please note that we do not prescribe controlled drugs.

Can a private GP issue a sick note or medical certificate?

Yes. Following your consultation, we can issue a private sick note, medical certificate or letter where clinically appropriate, and send it to you by PDF straight away. Medical letters and certificates are £100.

Can I have a telephone or video consultation?

Yes. You can choose in person (from £95), telephone (£49) or video (£79). Remote consultations suit advice, follow-ups and many common concerns, and we'll let you know if you need to be seen in person.

What happens after a GP referral?

You'll receive clear next steps: who you're being referred to, why, and how to arrange it. We can help you book onward care and coordinate follow-up.
