WeGovy Weight Loss Injections: A Breakthrough in Weight Management

WeGovy Weight Loss Injections

With 63% of UK adults being labelled either obese or overweight, weight management has never been so essential. Despite efforts to combat it through diet and exercise, many individuals struggle to achieve sustainable weight loss. Fortunately, recent advancements in medical science have led to the development of innovative treatments, including WeGovy weight loss injections.

What is WeGovy Weight Loss Injection? And how does it work?

WeGovy (Semaglutide) is a cutting-edge prescription medication approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight individuals who have at least one weight-related condition. WeGovy works by replicating a natural hormone that regulates appetite. By curbing your appetite, it encourages reduced food intake, facilitating weight loss. For optimal results, WeGovy is best complemented with a controlled diet and regular exercise routine.

WeGovy is available in five different doses. You start with 0.25 mg once a week for the initial 4 weeks to allow your body to adjust. From Week 5, the dose increases to 0.5 mg weekly, then to 1.0 mg, and if necessary, to 1.7 mg and eventually 2.4 mg. Once you reach 2.4 mg, you maintain this dosage for the rest of your treatment.

Who can use WeGovy?

The weekly weight loss jab is suitable for those who are over the age of 18 and with a BMI above 30 (or 27 with a weight related comorbidity).

Semaglutide will not be suitable and will not be prescribed if you fall into one of the categories below:

  • Under 18 or above 75 years of age
  • If you are breastfeeding, pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant.
  • Anyone who has liver or kidney problems, heart failure or pancreatitis.
  • Type 1 diabetics or patients taking diabetic medication which cause hypoglycemia, such as insulin or sulfonylureas.
  • Have or ever had eating disorders
  • Take other weight loss drugs or medication that work in the same way as WeGovy, e.g. GLP-1's such as Victoza, Ozempic, Saxenda, Trulicity.

How effective is WeGovy?

Clinical trials indicate that when used alongside diet, physical activity, and behavioural support, WeGovy users can achieve up to a 15% reduction in body weight after one year.

WeGovy vs. other weight loss injections

Wegovy and Saxenda are distinct weight loss injections, differing in their active components: Wegovy contains semaglutide, while Saxenda contains liraglutide. Despite this, both medications regulate appetite to aid weight loss. While limited studies compare them, one research indicates Wegovy may offer superior long-term weight loss compared to Saxenda.

Ozempic is another brand name for Semaglutide, which can be used for treating type 2 diabetes. Current guidance is clear that Ozempic should only be prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes to protect supply for diabetes patients. It should not be prescribed solely for weight loss. The same applies for Mounjaro, a variation of Tirzepatide.
