The significance of asbestos medicals cannot be understated, given the potential health risks associated with asbestos exposure. Private Medical Clinic aims to raise awareness about the severe and even fatal conditions linked to asbestos exposure, including Mesothelioma, Asbestos-related lung cancer, Asbestosis, Non-malignant pleural disease. Depending on your profession and responsibilities, you need one of two types of asbestos medicals in the UK. You will need to consult the HSE guidelines to clarify if your work needs to be “licensed” on “non-licensed”
Individuals involved in licensed asbestos work—such as demolition, asbestos removal, and insulation—are required to undergo medical assessments conducted by HSE Appointed Doctors. These assessments are mandated by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR) and must occur no more than two years before commencing work, with subsequent examinations at intervals not exceeding two years. Our licensed asbestos medical assessments include:
Medical and Occupational History Review: Evaluation of past and current health, focusing on respiratory conditions.
Respiratory Symptom Questionnaire: Completion of a standardised questionnaire to identify any respiratory issues.
Clinical Examination: A thorough physical examination emphasising the respiratory system.
Lung Function Testing (Spirometry): Measurement of lung capacity and function to detect any impairments.
Upon completion, a certificate of medical examination is provided, confirming compliance with CAR requirements. Employers are required to retain this certificate for at least four years.
For those engaged in non-licensed asbestos work—including tasks like garage and ceiling repairs, painting, and construction activities where asbestos-containing materials may be disturbed—medical examinations are also essential. Since April 2015, workers performing notifiable non-licensed work (NNLW) must undergo medical assessments before commencing such tasks. Our non-licensed asbestos medical assessments encompass:
Medical Questionnaire: Gathering information on medical history and potential asbestos exposure.
Clinical Examination: Focused assessment of the respiratory system.
Lung Function Test: Spirometry to evaluate pulmonary health.
These assessments help in early detection of any asbestos-related health issues and ensure adherence to safety regulations.

Do self-employed individuals need an asbestos medical?
Yes, self-employed individuals undertaking licensed or notifiable non-licensed asbestos work are responsible for arranging their own medical examinations to comply with CAR.
How often is an asbestos medical required?
For licensed work: Initial examination within two years before starting work, then at intervals not exceeding two years.
For non-licensed work: Before commencing notifiable non-licensed work, with follow-up intervals as advised by the medical examiner.
Ensuring regular asbestos medical assessments is crucial for early detection of potential health issues arising from asbestos exposure. At Private Medical Clinic, our experienced occupational health specialists are dedicated to providing thorough and compliant asbestos medical examinations, safeguarding your health and ensuring regulatory compliance.
What is the difference between licensed and non-licensed asbestos work?
Licensed Asbestos Work: Involves higher-risk activities with asbestos-containing materials and requires contractors to hold a license from the HSE.
Non-Licensed Asbestos Work: Non-Licensed Asbestos Work: Involves lower-risk activities that do not require a license but may still require notification to the HSE and adherence to specific safety protocols.
