What is Bacterial Vaginosis?
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a prevalent infection caused by an imbalance of natural bacteria in the vaginal environment. This imbalance can lead to various symptoms, including excess vaginal discharge accompanied by an unpleasant odour. While some cases of BV may resolve on their own with mild symptoms, in other instances, a course of antibiotic medication may be recommended for effective treatment.
What can Cause Bacterial Vaginosis?
Various factors can increase the risk of developing BV, including:
- Smoking: Being a smoker can contribute to the disruption of the vaginal bacterial balance.
- New Sexual Partner: Engaging in sexual activity with a new partner can impact the vaginal flora.
- Contraceptive Methods: Using an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception can potentially trigger BV in some cases.
