What is Thrush?
Thrush, scientifically known as candidiasis, is a common yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus. Candida naturally resides in the body, particularly in warm and moist regions such as the mouth and genitals. Normally, the immune system and beneficial bacteria keep candida in check. However, certain factors can lead to its overgrowth, resulting in infection.
Thrush infections often manifest in the mouth (oral thrush) or the genital area. While it is more prevalent among women due to the presence of candida in the vagina, men can also be affected. Men who haven’t been circumcised are more susceptible to thrush due to the conducive environment under the foreskin that promotes fungal growth.
Male Thrush Symptoms:
- Balanitis: Inflammation of the penis
- Intense itching, redness, and soreness of the penis head
- Discomfort while urinating
- Difficulty retracting the foreskin
- Presence of small red spots on the penis head
- Cheese-like smegma accumulation under the foreskin
Female Thrush Symptoms:
- Soreness and redness around the vaginal area
- Appearance of small red spots
- Yellowish discharge
- Itching and discomfort
At Private Medical Clinic, we offer a range of effective treatment options for thrush to ensure your comfort and well-being. Our experienced medical professionals can guide you through the following approaches:
Over-the-Counter Antifungal Creams: We recommend a selection of trusted over-the-counter antifungal creams that can help alleviate thrush symptoms. These creams work by targeting the fungal overgrowth and promoting healing.
Single-Dose Oral Medication: In cases where a more comprehensive treatment is required, a single-dose oral antifungal medication may be prescribed. This approach offers convenience and effectiveness.
Combination Therapy: Our experienced medical team may suggest combining antifungal treatment with a steroid cream to manage symptoms more effectively. This approach is particularly helpful for reducing inflammation and discomfort.
