Vitamin B12 Injections
In the realm of maintaining our health and well-being, certain essential nutrients take on a pivotal role. Vitamin B12 is one such nutrient that is indispensable for the health of our nerves and blood cells. Nonetheless, our bodies do not naturally produce Vitamin B12; we must acquire it through our dietary intake.

Who should consider Vitamin B12 injections?
If you suspect you may have a Vitamin B12 deficiency, it is crucial to undergo testing before initiating any treatment. Testing helps confirm the deficiency and ensures that you receive the appropriate care. You can request a Vitamin B12 test at one of our clinics. It’s vital to bring the test results with you to your appointment at Private Medical Clinic for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment.
The role of the Vitamin B12 Injection
Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal-based foods such as meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Supplementation may be necessary for those following a vegan diet or those who may not consume enough Vitamin B12-rich foods.
The Vitamin B12 injection is a notably practical approach to tackle Vitamin B12 deficiency. In the UK, hydroxocobalamin is the predominant form of Vitamin B12 injection used. While Vitamin B12 tablets (cyanocobalamin) are accessible over the counter, they are generally considered less effective compared to the injection for addressing severe deficiencies or cases where absorption issues are a concern.

The frequency of Vitamin B12 injections depends on the underlying cause of your deficiency:
- If the deficiency results from a dietary deficiency, injections may be administered every 6 months.
- In cases of pernicious anaemia or other conditions necessitating more frequent supplementation, injections may be required every 2-3 months.
It’s important to note that once treatment has commenced and your deficiency is being addressed, regular re-testing is typically not necessary. Your healthcare provider will determine the most appropriate injection schedule for your specific situation.
