Weight Loss Injections
Weight loss injections, such as Saxenda and Wegovy, are prescription-only medications that are only recommended after a comprehensive weight loss consultation with a GP. Weight Loss Injections will only be recommended if all other options have been exhausted and you are suitable for the treatment.
Wegovy received approval from the MHRA (Medicines and Health Products Regulation Agency) in the UK in September 2021 and was introduced to the market in September 2023. Private Medical Clinic now includes Wegovy in its weight loss services.

Wegovy Weight Loss Injection
Semaglutide is a medication used in weight loss injections that work by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone to regulate appetite and reduce food intake. Wegovy, a licensed weekly injection with Semaglutide, helps curb appetite and cravings, offering clinically proven, significant, and lasting weight loss.
How does our Weight Loss Clinic Work?
Our weight loss services begin with a thorough GP consultation, where we assess your goals, medical history, and lifestyle factors. Our doctors conduct a detailed review of your diet, exercise routine, and other elements that might influence your weight loss journey. Based on this evaluation, a personalised weight loss program is recommended.
If appropriate, your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of various protocols, which may include weight loss injections, tailored to your specific needs and preferences. We prioritise your safety and well-being throughout the process, ensuring a comprehensive and effective approach to your weight loss goals.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription-only, weekly weight loss injection that incorporates Semaglutide.
Administered once a week, it is clinically proven to be highly effective for weight loss.
- Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, which is licensed and approved for managing overweight and obesity in the UK. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for managing overweight and obesity in some patients
- Clinical trials indicate that when used alongside diet, physical activity, and behavioural support, Wegovy users can achieve up to a 15% reduction in body weight after one year.
Who is Suitable for Weight Loss Injections?
The weekly weight loss jab is suitable for those who are over the age of 18 and with a BMI above 30 (or 27 with a weight related comorbidity). After you complete your online consultation you will be assessed by the doctor who will take into account factors such as your BMI, your medical history, current medication etc.
Semaglutide will not be suitable and will not be prescribed if you fall into one of the categories below:
- Under 18 or above 75 years of age
- If you are breastfeeding, pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant.
- Anyone who has liver or kidney problems, heart failure or pancreatitis.
- Type 1 diabetics or patients taking diabetic medication which cause hypoglycemia, such as insulin or sulphonylureas.
- Have or ever had eating disorders
- Take other weight loss drugs or medication that work in the same way as Wegovy, e.g. GLP-1’s such as Victoza, Ozempic, Saxenda, Trulicity.
How Does Wegovy Work?
Wegovy works by replicating a natural hormone that regulates appetite. By curbing your appetite, it encourages reduced food intake, facilitating weight loss. For optimal results, Wegovy is best complemented with a controlled diet and regular exercise routine.
Wegovy vs Other Weight Loss Injections
Wegovy and Saxenda are distinct weight loss injections, differing in their active components: Wegovy contains semaglutide, while Saxenda contains liraglutide. Despite this, both medications regulate appetite to aid weight loss. While limited studies compare them, one research indicates Wegovy may offer superior long-term weight loss compared to Saxenda.
Ozempic is another brand name for semaglutide, which can be used for treating type 2 diabetes. Current guidance is clear that Ozempic should only be prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes to protect supply for diabetes patients. It should not be prescribed solely for weight loss.
How Is Wegovy Taken?
Wegovy is available in five different doses. You start with 0.25 mg once a week for the initial 4 weeks to allow your body to adjust. From Week 5, the dose increases to 0.5 mg weekly, then to 1.0 mg, and if necessary, to 1.7 mg and eventually 2.4 mg. Once you reach 2.4 mg, you maintain this dosage for the rest of your treatment:
- Weeks 1-4: 0.25 mg weekly
- Weeks 5-8: 0.5 mg weekly
- Weeks 9-12: 1.0 mg weekly
- Weeks 13-16 (or later): 1.7 mg weekly
- Weeks 17 onwards (or later): 2.4 mg weekly
What are the Side Effects of Weight Loss Injections?
Semaglutide generally induces mild side effects, particularly in contrast to the complications linked to excess weight and obesity.
Individuals using semaglutide for weight loss might encounter:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea, constipation, and gassiness
- Headaches
- Stomach-related concerns, such as nausea, vomiting, pain, or bloating
Among those starting semaglutide, gastrointestinal issues are frequently reported. However, initiating the medication at a lower dose and gradually escalating it may help mitigate these side effects.
Wegovy is a once-weekly weight loss injection that contains semaglutide 0.25mg – 2.4mg. The assessment of your suitability for this treatment will be conducted by our medical team during your consultation. Wegovy, when deemed appropriate and under medical supervision, can be a valuable addition to your weight loss journey.
Ozempic is a pre-filled, once-weekly injection containing Semaglutide. Although it is licensed by the MHRA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, it is also prescribed off-label for weight loss. When used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan under medical supervision, Ozempic has shown promise in supporting weight loss efforts.
